A casual mod for Half-Life
Black Mesa: Desk Job Mod is a free-to-play game utility developed by user Igi122. In this casual mod for Half-Life, you get to break away from the sci-fi action that the original game offers. Instead of blasting aliens and soldiers sent to the Black Mesa facility, you get to try being a normal office employee.
If you're looking for something unique to spice up your HL game experience, Black Mesa: Desk Job is a unique, funny entry you should definitely check out. A similar entry is the Can Punter Mod for Half-Life 2.
Toil away in the office
As a Half-Life mod, the first thing to expect from Black Mesa: Desk Job is that it retains most of the original game graphics and gameplay mechanics. It sports the same blocky, low-poly textures that make it visually at home with the original Valve action game. In fact, playing this game makes it feel like an unseen side of the greater lore, one that happens before the alien invasion.
For gameplay, the same default mapping is retained in this hilarious experience, although it doesn't translate well. It has the same WASD controls for the keyboard and the mouse for most interactions and camera controls. However, there are instances where moving gets difficult as certain glitches make it appear like your office character is bumping into invisible walls. On the plus side, it surprisingly captures how cramped real offices are.
Lastly, while it offers a refreshing funny experience for HL, this novelty gets old really quickly. There are not a lot of places to go to aside from the office floor where you're located. It captures how mundane and boring the average office life can be. With this approach to the overall game, it feels like this mod is a beta version of The Stanley Parable, without the mental challenge.
Just like the real thing
Building on the lore and the engine of the original Half-Life, Black Mesa: Office Desk Job manages to give players an entirely new gaming experience that also offers another perspective from the normal non-action office employees. It also captures the cramped and mundane feeling that sometimes comes with being an office employee. However, without a range of activities to do, it gets tiring after a few minutes.
